July 12 Departure Bordeaux towards Conakry.

August 19 Letter missionary, from Conakry to Julien’s father with a request to send money. 

September 05 Receipt “Docteur S. Konqui, Medecine Generale Accouchements Maladies des femmes” concerning Elly Julien-Roberts being sick.

September 21 Receipt hospital Fes (Morocco).

Fall 1939 into early 1940 correspondence about left behind materials, which seems related to both Elly and Julien himself falling sick with Malaria. This is also mentioned in the (undated) press release about the hardships that were part of this ‘scientific expedition’.

This is the first expedition undertaken by Julien after his marriage to Elly Julien-Roberts. It is also the only journey that is part of this research project on which his wife joined him. The couple did often travel together, just not to ‘equatorial Africa’.

September 14 and the following weeks numerous Dutch newspapers report the safe return of “Dr. Paul Julien, the Utrecht based Pygmy specialist” to the Netherlands.
